It was 1982 when Ford dropped their new diesel engine, a 6.9L indirect injection diesel engine produced in partnership with International Truck and Engine Corporation (ITEC), in their trucks. This was the beginning of the Super Duty trucks that would change the course of the industry.

This ITEC/Navistar diesel engine presented a new standard in diesel engine technology. The 6.9L Indirect Injection (IDI) engine produced a 170 HP and 315 lb-ft of torque. The truck industry was excited and welcomed this diesel with excitement that lasted from 1982 through 1987.

In 1988, Ford introduced the venerable update to it's diesel engine, the first true Power Stroke diesel. The Ford Super Duty truck with the 7.3L IDI Power Stroke diesel engine was produced from 1988-1993.

If you have one these first Power Stroke engines and need diagnostic, maintenance and repair work done, contact Garrett Auto and Truck Service. There isn't much difference between the 6.9L diesel engine and the 7.3L. The 7.3L is bored out larger. The 6.9L was not computer controlled, unlike the 7.3L.
